In this tutorial, I will guide you through the 5 rules to pick the right domain name for your business. If you are still looking for choosing the perfect domain name, just follow these simple rules and are very straightforward, and don’t overthink the process. Just keep it simple and move forward.
You can watch the video below for better understanding and continue reading this guide for more details:
Rule #1: As Short As Posible And Easy To Remember
Pick your domain name as short as possible, because a long domain name is harder for us to remember, harder for us to type in the search bar, and will be easier for us to spell it wrong. So pick a domain name that is short and easy to remember domain name.
Rule #2 : Easy To Pronounce
Use simple wording and don’t use local slang or words that only understand in your own country, because I believe you will want your visitor to come from worldwide and not only from certain parts of the world. So, just use simple and easy-to-pronounce words that are standard and understand worldwide.
Rule #3: Unique And Brandable
I certainly believe one day when you have gain authority, you want your website to be brandable with your own branding. In this case, I see most of the easy-to-pronounce and short words are unique and brandable. Just take an example like Apple, Sony, Samsung. Short, sweet, and brandable. Just keep your selected domain name short and easy to pronounce so it will easily be brandable.
Rule #4: Only Choose .Com Extension
If today you are alone, small or not well-known, it is better to stick with only the .com extension. This is the only trusted and best domain extension to gain your website authority unless you are big or have a special reason to do that to pick other extensions. If not, just pick a little longer domain with the .com extension. Keep maximum to 3 words.
Rule #5: Think For Long Term
You should pick a domain name that can continue using for the long term. Think of it 1 year ahead from now, all your knowledge will be going to be expended and you might need or want to extend your niche category. So don’t trap yourself with a domain name with a limited niche scope.
For example, if you pick “PizzaWithAndrew .com” you can only limit yourself to the pizza niche, and what about spaghetti or burger? You are limiting yourself by the domain name you have chosen.
So, it will be better if you pick “FoodWithAndrew .com” so that you can extend the food niche easily to other categories of foods in the future.
Bonus Tip: Don’t Use These
Just do not add any special characters, symbols, or funny letters to your domain name. It is very difficult for us to tell by the word of mouth or even write or find that character on the keyboard.
Don’t waste too much time and overthink it too much to choose a perfect domain name for yourself, because in the end it really doesn’t matter what domain name you choose. It will just never be going to be perfect for any name you choose. Just stick with the 6 rule process and you are good to go.
